Teairra Turner, who had been studying nursing at William Carey College in New Orleans, is taking anatomy and physiology courses offered by a community college in Colorado and nutrition offered by a college in Missouri.

Sloan Semester is providing a free on-line education for about 1,500 students displaced by Hurricane Katrina. Burks Oakley II, director of online education at the University of Illinois and one of the sponsors of the Sloan Semester, said it aims to provide "a bridge" to next January, when some colleges and universities may reopen.
