After librarians finished weeding out the junior high's books for mature content late Wednesday afternoon, the library reopened the next day, said Columbia-Brazoria ISD Assistant Superintendent Martha Buckner.

After two books were brought to the school board's attention as including curse words and vulgarity within one month, administrators decided to sort the books into sections.

A Brazoria woman said her grandchild brought home a book that contained the same four-letter profanity 13 times in eight pages and a West Columbia man said the book “Zero to Sixty: The Motorcycle Journey of a Lifetime” by Gary Paulsen, contained details of sexual acts and profanity. The book had been checked out from the school library by the man's 12-year-old son.

On Friday, forms were sent home with students asking parents whether it's OK to allow their children to check out books in that mature reader section, Buckner said.

Still, Monte Hurley, the parent who complained to the school board on Sept. 19, said he's still not satisfied with having books with certain profanity in the library at all.

Linda Nall, the woman who approached the board with a book her granddaughter brought home, said she's OK with having the mature section, as long as books similar to the ones she and Hurley presented to the board are not accessible to anyone.
