tudents, administrators and faculty at the Marshfield schools are working to prevent the problem of bullying and harassment in its schools. In addition to the new Safe School Initiative, students in the elementary and middle schools will see two interactive plays dealing with bullying and harassment in the next two weeks.
Kindergarten through grade three students will see "All Starz," a play in which three characters act out several scenes dealing with bullying, breaking off into cliques and respect. Fourth- through seventh-grade students will see "Doin' The Right Thing," a play in which three actors will act out several scenes dealing with bullying, abuse and respect. Cyberbullying is also addressed.
Both plays encourage young people to recognize teasing and bullying, to reach out to other students who may be targets of harassment and to help them see when to get help from adults. The play and the post-performance discussion following the play emphasize the role that all students have in ending the effects of this school safety issue. The "All Starz" and "Doin' The Right Thing" programs are produced and directed by Deana's Fund, a nonprofit organization based in Stoneham that is dedicated to promoting healthy relationships. Deana's Fund was established in 1994 after the death of Deana Brisbois, a young woman from Topsfield who was a victim of dating violence. Deana's Fund recognized the connection between peer and partner violence, and has become a national leader in relationship violence prevention.
