Actor Lou Diamond Phillips, best known for his role as rocker Ritchie Valens in the movie La Bamba, has been charged with domestic battery in a fight with his girlfriend, officials said yesterday. Phillips faces up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine if convicted of the misdemeanor count, which was filed Thursday in Los Angeles. His arraignment is set for Oct. 18. In an August dispute, Phillips is alleged to have "pushed and dragged (his girlfriend) across the house, resulting in scrapes to both knees," City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo said in a statement. The woman locked herself in a bathroom and called 911 for help. Diamond's spokesman declined to comment and said the actor's lawyers were still reviewing the charge. The girlfriend's name was not disclosed in a court filing or by the Los Angeles City Attorney's office.

Ashlee Simpson says she relates to her role as fame-hungry Roxie Hart in the London run of the musical Chicago. She's been there, done that. "The play is absolutely all about celebrity and wanting to be famous and having your name in the papers and your picture in the papers," the 21-year-old singer-actress said in a recent interview. "And, in that sense, it's been kind of cool because I've really got to connect to that, because I've seen that world and been in that world." Simpson, whose 2004 debut album, Autobiography, was a hit despite her Saturday Night Live lip-synching snafu, called her new role "extremely humbling. You are not a celebrity when you come here," she said. "Everyone is equal, everyone has to work together, so this has been amazing. But, as far as tabloids and whatnot go, I really try to keep my head out of them and try not to read the stories or anything like that, because they are never really true."

After a little more than three years of marriage, Matt Leblanc has finalized his divorce. The 39-year-old former Friends star has been granted joint custody of his two-year-old daughter with wife, Melissa LeBlanc, according to court papers filed Wednesday. Melissa LeBlanc has two children from a previous marriage. The LeBlancs filed for divorce on April 6, citing irreconcilable differences. They will be officially single again on Oct. 6. Under the terms of the divorce, LeBlanc will be financially responsible for his daughter's education, nanny and other needs. He will also pay US$15,000 a month in child support.
