First and foremost, a meaningful relationship must serve some sort of purpose. Some people date just for the sake of having a significant other.

I feel that such a relationship usually won't last long. A meaningful relationship has to be based on something more than infatuation, which is basically attraction based on appearance.

Don't get me wrong, I definitely think initial chemistry is required to start a relationship. However, as a bond grows, it can't be superficial.

Now that I have discussed some characteristics of a meaningful relationship, I will offer some advice in trying to find someone for such a relationship.

If you are like me, you might be nervous about starting a conversation with someone that interests you such as a person you meet in class or through an organization. It somehow seems easier online.

You could ask this person for the time if there are no clocks around. You might even try starting a conversation about the weather or some other topic you might have in common.

Even if you aren't interested, it is still a good idea to be polite when letting a guy know that you don't want to pursue a relationship with him. Take it as a compliment when a guy is interested in you.

Meaningful relationships are complex, yet they are rather simple. Just do as the golden rule says, "Treat others how you would like to be treated."
